We're less than a month away from evolutionary theory's release of the 8 minute epic remix of 'I'm Here' and we're about to release the next teaser (Tue August 16th PST, LA Time). The first teaser is at the bottom of the page for those of you who missed out! p.s. the responses to the teaser where a hoot! I'm nothing if not a great tease ; )

The next teaser will be more substantial and give you more meat from the song. You can hear Teaser 2 on evolutionary theory's Facebook page, or on his Soundcloud page. Make sure you check it, share it, and let us know what you think!

The House of Jote signs Exclusive Distribution Deal

For the last few weeks, online digital distributor Valley Arm has been in negotiations with The House Of Jote, (the label I founded and own) to be the exclusive distributor of all music released by the label. Currently, that includes my back catalogue and the music that evolutionary theory will start releasing at the end of this month and beyond. With 3 other artists currently being considered to be connected to the label over the next year, this deal is pivitol to the growth of The House of Jote and businesses of the artists associated to the label.

Valley Arm is the fastest growing global online distributor and currently has over 2,000,000 singles available to online stores. This week the deal was finalised and we are all super excited about the deal. Many thanks to Sarah Hamilton and the amazing team from ValleyArm. My team and I very excited about this exciting next step in building the global presence of all artists, current and future, on The House of Jote label.

New Dream Angel Vlog!

Today the second episode of the Dream Angel vlog came out. An episode will be released every monday from now on and wil be available publically on all my social media sites. Angelina Anniversary in the City Of Angels

As I sit here on my balcony on a Thursday afternoon, feeling the cooling breeze relieve the heat of this hot Hollywood day, it strikes me that in a few days I will have been living in Los Angeles a year! July 11th is a date I affectionately refer to as my Angelina Anniversary!

This is an strange place this City Of Angels, and as anyone who has come here for more than just a vocation will tell you...if you need to learn what you're made of, Los Angeles is the place to do it.

I have found that in all the cities I've spend time in all over the world, so far, none have spoken to me as directly and as honestly as LA. I have a question, she gives me an answer- and usually in the strangest ways. She has been the most direct & loving of mothers to me...never telling me what I wanted to hear, but always revealing my truth to me! The truth is not always that easy to hear, as I'm sure anyone reading this can understand.

I got talking with a stranger on the street a few weeks ago. One of those rare people born and bred in LA. When he found out that I was coming up to my first Angelina Anniversary, he nodded his head with a sympathetically and said "Things getting tough now about now right? Just stick it out. It all gets better if you can make it past your first year". Intrigued at this stranger who was offering up so much insight, I let him continue.

"Yep, I've seen them come and I've seen them go. The first 3 months are either awesome or hell, depending on how much money you brought with you and what attitude came with it. If you make it past 3 months, months 4,5 & 6 are always hell because no matter how much money you brought with you, you're living off of credit cards from the 4th month on." Fascinated at his analysis I signalled for him to go on.

"Things calm down a little between months 6-10 but not by much. After that, everything gets really really tough. That's when you get to see what Hollywood is really about. You start missing home, you realise that the people here are mostly fake, and that most people are friends with you for one reason- to find out how being friends with you can help them". By this stage I was wondering who the fuck this guy was and how he knew so much about me. I continued to listen.

"Hollywood is different from the rest of the world. The people who come here and live here are usually stuck in limbo. They're waiting for their lives to start. They've come here to make it big but most of them haven't grown up enough before they get here so they get lost in trying to be a star. When it all goes wrong for them they start smoking too much weed or they just leave and move back in with their parents because they've run out of money." Looking at this hipster, a self confessed stoner who became utterly disappointed at the discovery that I didn't smoke, I was blown away at his insight into so many of the people I had met. I asked him to continue....

"Now, if you came here knowing how hard it's going to be, and you can make it past the 12 months, everything will open up to you at around 1 year and 3 months. It's like you've proved yourself to her [LA] and she starts to help you with whatever it is you need. If you stay for 2 years, you're never leaving." We chatted for about another half an hour and I went about the rest of my day reflecting the whole time about what he'd said. I'd felt that this amazing woman [LA] had given me a heads up as to what was about to come and she'd used this conversation with the hipster stoner dude to get the message to me.

Things had become tough around that time, but only because I was being shown so much truth not only about myself, but about a lot of the people around me. Accepting that truth and letting go of some reoccurring patterns in my life was making acceptance tough. But she was telling me to stick it out. Armed with the knowledge she'd given me in her strange way, I maintained my focus on what I came here to do...create an album that embodies my exploration of my identity in a life that continues to fascinate and inspire me.

I was so inspired by the whisperings of this city, that I was lead to create this music video documentary for my previously released single 'All This Fear'. It shows the my journey so far in this intense yet blessed life of mine. If you haven't seen it yet please check it out below and share it with your friends. The Night Before...

It's 4am here in Hollywood and tonight (or this morning) my mind is not my friend. It's always this way leading up to releasing anything...no matter how big or small the release is. Tonight I've realized that this is a very real part of being an artist...dealing with our doubts and the fear of how we will be judged for the things we've created.

Tomorrow (well today) we'll be releasing a music video documentary for the song 'All This Fear'. It's an account of my journey so far and putting it together was really quite an emotional process. To go through my personal footage of the last 6 years of my life and relive all those moments really gave me some perspective of how much has happened in that time. After watching the finished video yesterday I was really moved by my own journey. I felt a sense of relief in the fact that the video carried the same sentiment as the song. I was happy....tired and emotionally exhausted, but happy.

Yet in the wee hours of this morning, in the quiet outside when Hollywood is momentarily asleep, my thoughts are raging with nerves and unfriendly thoughts about what people will think of what's been created. Why? Why when I'm so happy with the end product am I still feeling like this and having these thoughts? Because no matter who we are, we all at some level care what people will think about what we create. As artists, until we release our creations, they're still not finished and can't be judged. But once we release them, we're saying we've done the best we could. It's a statement of finality. I've never been one for finality, or judgement, but moments like the stillness of this morning are helping me realise that this is all part of the ride.

I guess these feelings are an indication of how important all this is to me...

If It’s Broke, Don’t Fix It…..Just Yet!

(From my Dream Angel Blog post May 25th 2011- This will explain my I haven't blogged in a little while)

I have a very beautiful Mac Book Pro. I spend alot time with him and use him to do most of my work. I write and record music on him, manage my music business on him, stay in touch with family and friends all over the world, and keep in touch with fans using social media all with Mac. In my eyes, best kinda husband a girl could have ; )

Well last week my husband [Mac] decided he was going on hiatus (right after his 3rd birthday I might add). One minute he was on, I went to check on the laundry, and when I came back he was totally turned off and couldnt be turned on again (no pun intended). All I could do was laugh. Everyone said to me, “you watch, once your warranty runs out, he’ll die. All Mac’s do it.” I was convinced my Mac was different. My ever faithful husband had never let me down. When he did end up crashing 2 months after the warranty had run out I didn’t even bother getting angry about it. I decided that I would just take time to the Mac store and get him fixed.

I woke the next day at my usual 6am and found myself reaching for Mac, the second my eyes opened, to check my emails and what had been going on with everyone on FB and Twitter. Then I went into shock. I remembered he was sick and needed to go to the doctor. Hell, what was I going to do for the first 2 hours of my day without him and then for the 2 hours after that while waitin for the Mac Store at The Grove to open??? How was I going to check the blogs I normally check, stalk what my friends had been doing in the hours I had been asleep and check the dropbox my producer and I share for any new material he’d worked on since yesterday??????

I couldn’t do anything that was in my usual routine.

I took a second and though, screw this Im going for a hike. There has to be a reason why this has happened. You may have established from my previous blog posts that Im a thinker. Nothing can just happen in my life for no reason. Everything has a reason and I needed to understand why Mac had abandoned me (or why Apple was being so cruel as to force a predetermined rift between by trusty husband and I).

As I made my way up Runnon Cannon searching for the reason to this shocking event in my life, it came to me. I was addicted to my Mac!!!! Me, the chick who’d given up the corporate life and most of her possessions to live a simple life and not formulate any unhealthy attachements. By the time I’d got down the hill I realized that Mac was going to have to stay asleep for a little while. At least a few weeks. I needed to know what I had been missing out on because of my blind sighted addiction to him.

It’s been a week now and I have to tell you, two things have happened- well three actually.

1) I have been alot more productive with my life and found new ways to get things done that will infact benefit the album and my personal life.

2) I have a much greater appreciation for Mac and what he means to me

3) I have been cheating on Mac with Teddy- my iPod touch (it’s not an emotional relationship though so it doesn’t really count)

I’m going to give it another week and then take mac to Hospital to bring him put of his coma. I’m enjoying the new-ness our time apart has brought into my life, like right now I’m sitting in a park in Hollywood typing this blog post around other humans. I never make time to do things like this and am actually loving it. He’ll be back in my life soon enough but the time apart has done us both some good!

Something Special Coming Before The First Single!

Recently I told fans on Facebook & Twitter that there would be a special little musical surprise coming before the release of the first single 'Shackles' from the new album. The single is due for release some time in April and both Producer Luke Emrose and I are super excited about the direction the single and album are taking.

This week, I'm excited to let the cat out of the bag and announce that Luke, AKA Evolutionary Theory, will be releasing a remix of 'I'm Here' (Twilight Saga: New Moon fans may recall the buzz when the original version was released). The remix should be in clubs everywhere this coming summer and will be released on iTunes sometime in April.

This weekend while we were in the studio with Joe Vezzetti here in Hollywood recording the vocals for 'Shackles', we took the opportunity to cut the vocals for 'I'm Here'. Here is a little 'Behind The Scenes' video of what that looked like.

In the Studio...via skype!

So this week we have finally finished tracking the first album single 'Shackles'. For those who don't know what that means, basically we've finished laying the music for the song. In the recording process we start with song writing, then go to preproduction (to determine the sound, the structure, the feel etc of the song) then to production where we do both instrumental and vocal tracking, and then the final 2 stages- Mixing and mastering!

Because this is the first single of a new genre for me, electronica, we spent a very long time working on the sounds and structure of 'Shackles' so that we could set the stage for what was to come for the rest of the album. My producer (Luke Emrose of Evolutionary Theory) has not only spent a ridiculous amount of time writing the beats and sounds for the song, he's also written new software to make this album! THE MAN IS A GENIUS and this will be the album that will put him on the map! We're both creative nerds who have found a synergy between our love for music and the thinking that goes on to create it.

Our goal was to finish tracking for 'Shackles' by this past weekend so that vocals could be laid the next week. Luke and I work remotely of each other- he is Sydney and me in LA, and then meet via Skype to discuss, write, listen, rework, and set new goals for the next meeting. By the time this album is finished, Luke and i will never have been in the studio together! That fact unto itself is mind blowing to me as I'm sure it is to anyone else who's been involved in the album creating process!

Anyway, on Saturday, in our final listening session for the tracking for 'Shackles', I took a listen and something didn't quite feel right. I listened a number of times but couldn't put my finger on it. All the sounds were crisp, there was a great build up, there was a lot going on and....that was it- there was too much going on. I said to Luke "It feels like I can't feel the core of this song. There's too much distracting the awesomeness of this meaty beat you've written".....he laughed at my typical Miss Lee ways of describing things and we started removing and shredding layers to reveal this "awesome meaty beat" that now had room to breath and gave the song new life. By the time we were done shedding, the song was ready!

Less was so much more in this case and the same thing seems to be paralleling in my own life. I'm shedding the noise around the core of who I am...removing the bullshit to let the real me shine! This album is mirroring my life in it's exploration....I can only hope that by the end of this album, the stage is set for what I hope will be an incredible life and music career!

'Shackles'...Just to give you an idea of the Pre-Production Process

Just to give you an idea of what the pre-production process involves in getting a song to the point where you're ready to lay down the final version, I've included a screen shot of how many version's we've already had of 'Shackles'....and this is just to get the structure of the song perfect! Believe it or not- We're still not there!!!!

Luke and I both believe that the more work you put into pre-production the smoother final recordings should go.

A Major Reveal About The Upcoming Lee Safar Album- It Will Be an ELECTRONICA Album

It's fair to say that I'm an intense person! By intense I mean that I'm someone who thinks ALOT and very deeply...and about everything that comes my way. If you need clarification on how intense, just refer to the lyrics of any song on my first EP 'Who I've Become'. If you need further clarification, ask anyone who knows me...they'll tell you exactly how crazy and intense I am! I've been that way since I was a kid. Much to my parents horror I questioned everything...and I thought about everything they said so that I could try make sense out of it. As a western girl raised with very Arab values, you can imagine, not a lot made sense....and my intensity, for whatever it was worth, wasn't always appreciated!

That intensity is now part of what defines me as an artist. I don't do "Oh ah baby baby". There are enough people who do that and do it well. Try and imagine me wearing a school girl outfit dancing around like Brittney Spears....singing "baby baby how was I supposed to know" PA-LEASE!!! It's just not me. It's not what I'm about. After recording my first release 'Who I've Become' I always wondered how I would know what my next album would sound like. I didn't want it to sound the same as 'Who I've Become' but I was confused as to how artists like Madonna continued to re-invent themselves while still staying true to themselves as artists who want to to stimulate a conversation about what they have to say.

It took me longer than I thought it would to begin creating the album that would be the follow up to 'Who I've Become'. I'll be honest, I didn't even know how one goes about determining what an album should be 'about'...how does one know such things if they've never done it before??? 'Who I've Become' was a collection of 5 songs that seemed to work well together just by accident. It was a reflection the events of the years that lead up to its creation. Approaching a full length album was going to be a different challenge, an exploration...the next steps into my life as a single woman, no long married or in a secure life with all the people I love around me. I didn't just want to have an album to show for my efforts at the end of the process. There had to be more in it for me on a personal level. Most importantly, it needed to inspire me, those involved in the process, and those who heard it.

When speaking to bands about how they approached recording their own albums it was either one of 2 scenarios. Either bands have a bunch of songs they've been playing on tour for years and record them as best as they can afford, hoping and praying that sales will at least make them their money back while they're on tour over the next couple of years. Or the artist is signed to a label that will put them with one or more writers who have recently done something cool in the hope that they'll write one hit song that the label can build an album around. I'm not in a band that has toured for the last couple of years, I don't aspire to be a struggling artist playing shows that makes everyone money except for me (which is the unfortunately reality for most artists) and I am not signed to a label (by choice), so neither of these options would formulate my approach. Like with everything in my crazy journey, I knew the pieces would just fall into place- if only I could get the fuck out of my own way for long enough!!!

In October of 2010, amongst a shit storm of pain that I was emerging from, I knew it was time to make this album. I didn't know how, but I knew that I would use the making of this album to explore 3 themes that are at present very poignant to my journey - 'Discovering my identity', 'Learning how to let go', and 'Having fun'. The album would serve as a way for me to understand these three themes in my own life, as well as serving as a vessel for me to practise implementing my discoveries of these themes while making the album. Rather than get a label to help me create the record, I brought on board a life coach, Terri Cook (who is now a dear friend), to help me stay focused on these themes as well as the business objectives of the album, without becoming overwhelmed with all that needed to get done.

In the first few days of thinking about the sound & tone of the album, as well as the possible producers, the names and people I was meeting with included Grammy award winning producers who have worked with some of my idols. The fact that these people would actually meet with me after hearing my work on 'Who I've Become' blew me away. I will forever cherish having my first Pastrami sandwich with super producer John Boylan (Boston, Linda Ronstadt, LRB, Elmo) at Jerry's in Woodland Hills here in LA! I grew up listening to Linda and always wanted to be her. Meeting the man that created her records has me star struck (which is something that rarely happens to me)! But then one of those crazy 'Lee Safar' moments happened that would change the sound of the album and who would end up producing it!

It was the day after I had been in the studio recording the vocal for a song I had co-written with Sydney based producer and song writer Luke Emrose of Evolutionary Theory. The song wasn't intended for the album. It wasn't even in the same genre as what I thought the album would be in. It was an idea that we were just playing with and wanted to hear laid down. The song was called 'These Lies' and came from a 'vocal only' recording that I had sent Luke 4 months earlier recorded from my laptop mic. He created the music track and we decided to lay the 'real vocal' over the new track and see what it sounded like. The amount of fun I had doing this was unlike anything I'd experienced before. I felt free, energised, excited, pumped, and everything in between. I woke up the next day and though "Fuck I hope making my album is as much fun as this"...those who know me can tell you how quickly it would have taken my intense thinking to get to the next thought!

I decided to abandon ship with all the other producers I was considering, Grammy Awards or not, and asked Luke to be the sole producer for the album. He was thrilled and jumped on board right away! No-one was more shocked than I was at my decision. Not because of Luke- he's amazing. But because making this decision determined that the new album would be in a new genre- ELECTRONICA! I decided that making the album in a genre that I knew very little about would force me out of my comfort zone and be the perfect basis to explore the theme 'Discovering my identity'! How better to parallel exploring my own identity while making an album, than to explore the identity of a new genre of music. To make this decision, it took me letting go of everything I thought this album was going to be and being open to limitless discoveries of myself, my producer, the new songs, and the endless possibilities of the next chapter of the Lee Safar journey! Now, 5 months into the project I can't tell you how amazingly happy I am that I made that decision. The material is sounding so great and the people who have heard bits of it are super impressed. It's still very me, just better, more honest and even more real than what you're used to of me!!! Still the same intense lyrics with some of the haunting melodies, but many surprises along the way. Certainly not what you're expecting....but I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Below is a list of songs that have made it to the 'for consideration' stage of the pre-production process for the album, which I'm hoping will end up having around 13 songs on it. The list will grow before it gets shorter and is sure to change immensely before the release in about 6-8 months time. But the first single 'Shackles' should be out in about 2 months with the second one out 2 months after that!

Luke and I are working stupid hard at getting it done- Me here in LA and he in Sydney, but we're having a crazy fun time doing it! It's challenging both our usual styles of music but we're creating music that we're both seriously proud of. All we can hope is that you guys will love it too.

The Ponderings of A Woman...about being a woman!

Womanhood! A theme that has ruled every aspect of my life well beyond the realms of physicality and genetics for the whole of this life. Almost every action and decision, no matter how large or small, has been influence by my womanhood. I had no idea of this until today. As I sit in my bed on a Sunday Morning having just watched 'For Colored Girls', a movie based on the play by Ntozake Shange's play 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf', I am left wondering how my 'womanhood' has shaped my life and the life decisions I have made. This is a particularly interesting time to have found this movie- I'm recording an album, writing a book, working on a possible TV show and also following other passions. All I'm going to say about this movie is see it. It's an adaptation of a play and it looks like a movie that is an adaptation of a play (if you know what I mean) but the balls of this movie is all in the second half of it...and well worth seeing.

I am struck by my realisations this morning as I think about the influence my own womanhood has had in my own life. Particularly when I consider that my womanhood is something that has confused me my whole life. Not the idea of being a woman- that is apparent. What I mean is that the idea of what it really means to be a woman has never crossed my mind. I'm rather perplexed as to why such an important detail was never analysed! Particularly as being born a woman was what was supposed to limit my progress in life and success! Let me give you some background.

I was raised the daughter of a man who appeared to be very clear on the role of women in life. A strong catholic man, raised by a stronger catholic man, who both thought that they knew more than any woman. They were not alone in their ideals. These were the ideals of all the men in their village, and remained the ideals of those men when they migrated to Australia and brought chose future wives from their native village who would later follow them to Australia and marry them their and raise families.

I was raised by a woman who was engaged to my father at 14, left her family in Syria at the age of 15 to marry him, and then had her first children, twin girls, at the age of 16 and her other 2 children by the age of 21. She was a very quiet, very traditional girl who knew her place and her role and she played it very well. Both my parents came from a culture, and a time, where tradition, culture, and religion were the elements of life that gave them the rules to live by, and the security of knowing that they were good people, if they lived within those rules.

Then they had me!

I was very difficult as a child. Not because I did the things that you expect difficult children to do (drugs, sex, smoke, not study, blah blah blah). I didn't do any of that. I was the constant source of anguish because when something didn't make sense, I questioned it. The rules, the traditions, the idea that, because of who you are, you have more or less value in a conversation, in community, in life. I grew up in a constant state of conflict and unable to identify with any real group of people. Hence why the current material I'm working on for the album is heavily focused on 'Finding your identity'.

I could see that my parents, and those around them, found so much security in following the rules as their culture dictated, and i really wanted so badly to share that sense of stability. There were times when I played the roles so well, but it was always jaded once I started thinking about what I was doing. Eventually came my demise from that world and I spent a number of years with targeted focus of rebuilding my own belief structures based on what I truly embrace as my own values. It was like the worst kind of hellish reconstructive surgery at times. But you have to re-break broken bones that weren't set right in the first place.

It's now been a few years and I am only just now confident that my stability is based on my own ideals and values. Not the values of another persons, a religion, a tradition, a culture. But what does all this have to do with womanhood? I was shocked to find that many of the ideals that my father had are also ideals that alot of the men around me had, no matter where I went in the world and no matter what culture. Don't get me wrong, I love men. I really really do. But I now find myself living in Hollywood, with almost no arab men around, and I'm confronted with many of the same ideals about the roles of women and men in this community. Is that because they are mostly Jewish men around here who have similar values to arab men? It could be, but to be honest with you I'm not sure that it has anything to do with the men at all. It's me.

My fathers attitude to woman, and my mothers acceptance of that attitude defined my perspective that, if I am to be successful in this world, I would have to overcome my womanhood. This realisation has really floored me. I have been subconsciously living my life with the idea that my womanhood was an obstacle to my chance at success and in order to be successful I would have to overcome my womanhood. WTF!!! No wonder I keep getting in my own way! It seems I have subconscious beliefs that do not match up with my conscious beliefs. What's also crazy is that it seems I've spent most of my life, if not all of it, discounting the importance my womanhood has to my success.

Time to make some serious changes...and let go just a little more! Can't wait to see what this brings to the new album!

As Christmas arrives in my hometown in Sydney, and Christmas Eve is here in my new hometown of Los Angeles, I'd like to wish everyone and their precious friends and family, as well as my own friends and family, an incredible holiday season.

I will be going off the grid for a few days to get some much needed rest and quiet time in order to recharge and begin preparing for what is set to be a massive 2011 for all things Lee Safar. Thank you all for the incredible support in 2010. I honesty and truly could not have done all this without you! 2010 has been such an mind bowing year and it really does feel like it's the precursor to what is destined to be a spectacular 2011- An album coming out, possible TV show, and a book!!! It's going to be a massive year!

Before I turn my laptop off for a few days, I want to wish you, your families and and all your loved ones enormous amounts of love and peace for this moment and beyond. To my family both chosen and blood.....thank you for more than you can ever know xxx

Henry Arrives in LA

It's a funny thing this thing we call life! I swear I feel like I've died and been reborn so many times in my short years here. As I sit in my apartment in Hollywood and ponder the year that has passed, it has lead me to think of the years before and how many deaths it took for me to be in this moment....a moment where I finally feel alive.

The concept of life is strange to me right now. After spending tonight song writing with Henry (my keyboard who has finally joined me in LA after so many months apart) I came to ponder the journey that lead both of us here, to Hollywood! The discoveries were profound enough to take me to my mediation mat.

As I touched Henry for the first time in many months we instantly remembered, like lovers that had never forgotten the sound of each others voice or the feel of their touch. And as I listened to him sing the melodies I played, I thought of the time when we first met- I was instantly in love with him and equally fearful of his awesomeness and potential to render me strong and vulnerable in the same breath. A state that only he has truly seen me!

From the moment we first met, Henry became the only man in my life. At the time this dissatisfied my husband profusely. I can't say that I blame him. For some years before Henry entered my life, my husband consumed my life. I lived to make him happy and he to make me happy. We were blissfully in love and making great progress in establishing our lives together. I was an active participant in those plans and look back at that now and I do not recognise the woman that I was. One day, my husband encouraged me to get a hobby. Soon after that, I found music again....or should I say, it found me again. Right before our marriage ended, he told me that he cursed the day that he told me to find a hobby. He loved my music but if he had have known that it would have lead to me realising that I had another path, he would never have spoken those words. To this day, I feel guilt about that but am getting close to acceptance.

There was one other before Henry I should tell you about. Her name was Anabelle. She was my first and while I still love her very dearly (and wrote 3 of the 5 songs from 'Who I've Become' on her) she is more like a best friend to me than a lover. With Henry, it was & still is true love. The kind that, as an artist, takes your breath away. It's not the mechanical aspect of him that I am in love with. Not the keys, or the incredible technology that Korg has employed to create such a beautiful keyboard. It's the response he elicits from me. The intensity a woman feels when she touches a mans skin and watches to see him respond. Totally breathtaking! I learn more about myself from being with him. He shows me the way to elicit the best out of him. I know he's a machine....I am not delusional. But this machine is the equivalent of my yoga mat. I know when I am unbalanced by the avoidance I show him. I know that I am feeling free by the way I play without judging myself. I remember that I am a human with limitations when I can't seem to find the next chord to the song that I'm writing.....this is how Henry teaches me and how I love learning from him. In dealing with my divorce, and healing so much other darkness in my life, this was the safest way for me to experience true intimacy. The kind that connects an artist with her truth. A direct line to the God within and thus eventual peace of the soul!

I have mostly been in darkness for the years that I have had Henry. I have died many huge deaths and witnessed many major rebirths. I now embrace those experiences with vigor, encouraging them to come as I finally realise that the deaths are the beginning of the rebirth. But as I come closer to accepting myself for who I am and what I am becoming, I realise that without passion and purpose and determination in my life.....Henry would just be a very expensive keyboard and I would be a very average artist that brought you 'Oh Ah Baby Baby' songs.

Creating a Lee Safar Album.....The Journey!

The idea of putting an album together is an interesting and intense journey. The process behind that journey can certainly be life changing for some artists! 'Who I've Become' (2007/08), my first creation was hugely instrumental in changing my life and lead me to the most pivotal and defining moment of my life to date....the end of a 7 year marriage to the man who was the first person to encourage my music and believe in me with all his heart! The details of my marriage is something that I am asked about a lot by fans and many who read my bio. It's not something I've never spoken publicly about and don't intend revealing any details, but for those who have asked and never got an answer, my marriage did not survive the making of 'Who I've Become'. In fact, "Who I've Become' is an ode to the process that lead to the end of my marriage....the discovery of myself!

As I reflect on the mammoth intensity, emotion, and growth that I experienced while creating 'Who I've Become', I am reminded that I spent much of that time feeling totally out of my element, terrified that I didn't know what I was doing, and worried about what people would think about my music- it was a secret to most of the people in my life and an experience that I do not intend to have again with anything I produce.

It is now time to create a new offering, and for those of you who are expecting more of the same of 'Who I've Become' I am afraid you will be disappointed. My life is hugely different to 2007/2008 and while 'Who I've Become' changed my life, the new record will be an account of my life as I embark on my journey to understand what 'Fun' means to me. A concept that may sound surreal to many but an idea that is super intimidating to me.

Fun has never been a focus in my life and I have always been considered a very serious person who over achieved and did everything ridiculously well but could never have fun for no reason. There always had to be a purpose behind everything I did. I'm now discovering that being happy is the purpose behind having fun. A novel concept right? Well while I may not be used to the idea, my mission is to have gained some real insight into what that concept means to me by the time I've written and recorded this album. That means I'm going to have to make some choices that put me way way waaaaay out of my comfort zone. There is one rule I live by now....If it makes me happy, I have to have it!

I am not used to basing my life on my own happiness and in the couple of months that this has been my mantra, I cannot tell you the amazingness I've discovered within myself....it's like I've learned to giggle and laugh for the first time. I've found myself so happy that tears are the only means for me to express that happiness. These are the moments I'm aiming to show you through the creation of this album. So for those who are looking for another haunting, dark, slash your wrists kind of epic journey....I should prepare you from now. It will have all the Lee Safar hallmarks- I will still be baring my soul, It will still sound like me, you will learn more about yourself from the lyrics in the songs, however that's where all the similarities end. You will be surprised...I hope pleasantly!

I'll be posting details of what's going on a lot more regularly from now on. There is so much going on in this huge journey of living my dreams and the album is but 1 of 4 major projects happening in my life at the moment. The rest are all related to music in one way or another, but combine with my 2 other very important passions- Coffee and Dream Angel! Wait till I make the announcement about the project that ties them all together....that one involves Hollywood! It's all very exciting and intense and fun and if I go on any longer I'm going to reveal parts about the projects that I'm not allowed to reveal because of non-disclosure. LOL

Just know that the album really is just one part of this major ride that I'm on and I'm working around the clock 8 days a weeks to create this fun filled world that feeds me with passion and happiness. If I haven't posted anything is a few days come check my FB or Twitter page for more recent updates....that's were all the juicy goss is told when it happens!

I can't tell you how excited I am about this.....I'd like to officially introduce you to Miss Lee Smurf.

Yep she's real!!!! My very own Smurf drawn by Steve Curcuru from the official 'The Smurf's' movie currently in production. As a huge fan of The Smurfs as a kid, having myself drawn as one is just the coolest thing ever! I'm like a little kid about the whole thing and sometimes but she's so bad ass and I love her soooooo much!

You can be sure that there will be T-Shirts of this little lady! hehehe

The Journey Begins!

So the journey to create my first full length album has begun and I'm feeling super excited. I realise that creating an album is a dream that many strive for, but the chance to do so lives only in their dreams for so many people. For this reason I've decided to share the experiences involved in creating the album and everything associated with it through these blog posts. I hope that, if nothing else, my sharing these experiences will inspire just one more person to take the leap of faith to live their dreams.

When creating an album, there is so much to consider beyond the songs. There's the style of the album, the artwork, the video clips, the branding, the performances, the genres of the songs, my styling, what team to put together to bring the project to life, the funding of the project, etc etc etc....it's a huge endeavour to embark on and through it all I need to find a way to stay sane and further more ENJOY IT!

There are many questions that need to be asked right at the beginning of the project and then answered along the way. What do I want to say with this album? What do I want people to know about me and my life through this album? Who do I want to involve in this process? Why do I want to create this album? Who do I want to listen to it and why? Who's opinions matter in the process of creating this album. Who can I trust to be honest with me and have my best interests at heart, not their own. So so sooooo much to consider!!!! Throughout the process of creating the album I'll share some of my insights to the journey with you and expose the craziness of what it takes to make this work.

Going in, while I'm super excited, I'm also super scared and am faced with a bunch of fears! That tells me that I'm onto a winner! If I wasn't scared, this wouldn't be worth doing. You guys are used to me being honest about all this stuff I'm not going to change that now! I'll share the fears along the way and give you insight into how I face them. This is a rare opportunity to see the making of an independent album in detail from day one....the excitement and the struggles! Along the way, I encourage your feedback and your ideas's. You guys are always super supportive and I can't tell you how much love I feel from everyone. It carries me through on the tough days and it inspires me further on the up days! Keep the love coming as loud as you can and you will help shape the album with that love!

A Major Announcement About What's Next!!!

So so sooooo much to tell you about! Far too much to do in one post so today we're going to start with one major announcement...THE NEW ALBUM!

I'm finally so proud to announce that a producer has been selected for the new album and we will begin work on it this week. I'm so super excited I can't contain myself. I have spent the last few months writing new songs specifically for the album and searching for the perfect producer to execute the songs the way I want to hear them on this album...let me tell you I am more than happy with my choice and I promise you, the new album is going to be a huge surprise. Expect the unexpected!

I look forward to sharing more details with you as the journey gets underway but for now, I wanted to let you know that the journey has officially started and the album will take around 6 months to be ready to release.....I am beyond excited to hear what it sounds like!

In the mean time, I wanted to share with you a few shots from a studio session from last week that was telecast live on Ustream. I'm hoping to do a few more sessions like this so that it gives you guys a insight into what's involved in recording an album without revealing too much of what the songs are going to sound like! A huge thank you to Joey V (Joe Vezzetti)- a wizard of an engineer and a great great guy! There's a reason why he's one of the best in Hollywood and I'm so honoured to be recorded by him and his beautiful custom mic! You Rock sir!

Album or Singles? Deciding What The Way Ahead Will Be!

It's no secret that the music industry is in a transitional phase. The labels are approaching a well earned death, and independent artists are finding new ways to side step the bullshit that labels artist had to endure to get their music out there.There are a number of new business models emerging and everyone is waiting for the 'one' that is going to 'fix' the issues our industry is having with revenue!

You see, the music industry is experiencing a serious problem. Our product, music, is increasing in demand almost 10% every year....sounds great right? Sure it would be if that meant that what we were earning was also going up, but it's not. It's going the other way. We all know the affects that free downloading is having on the music industry and I believe that trying to make people pay for music is pointless. It's a loosing battle. The industry has to accept that this is just how music is consumed these from now on.

I have my reasons for not downloading music for free and it's mostly got to do with quality. When I pay for the art, I get it the way the artist intended for me to hear it. That way I'm not ripping them off and I'm not ripping myself off. We're both happy and they keep bringing me more music....

The beauty about all these changes in the industry is that there is no longer the standard model and artists are trying different things with releasing music. This is possible because most of us are not tied to labels. I am no exception to that and am considering a few options in the way I will be releasing music in the next 12 months. I thought I'd seek some advise from y'all (God I love that word LOL) about some of these options of the next few weeks during my decision making process.....if you don't mind that is.....y'all (ha I love American speak) ; )

So at the moment I'm making decisions about how to release the songs that I'm going to record. Here are the 2 options:

Idea 1: Release my first full length album which will take about 6 months to get done

Idea 2: Release a single a month for 12 months starting in about 2 months. With the single would come an acoustic version of a previously released song, and a remix of a previously released song.

I would love to hear what you guys think about this and it will actually help me bring you the product you will want to pay for (I hope). The songs will still be the honest raw intense songs that you're used to and will be about my own life experiences as per usual. That wont change. The remixes, some of which are in the works of being remixed now, will be a little different to what you expect. I'm very excited about those.

Can an Artist Really Be Too Honest?.....PART 2

Thank you to everyone who commented on yesterdays blog post. It created quite a bit of chat on FB and twitter. Just what I was hoping for- stimulating conversation about what is expected and acceptable from artists and their art, and what responsibility they have to an audience in relation to the integrity of that art.

As you'll recall from yesterday, this discussion was sparked by an anonymous phone call from someone who had come to one of my shows complaining that the honesty in my show had an obscenity about it:

"A friend of mine took me to your show on Friday and I have to tell you that I found it obscenely confronting. When people go out they don't need to be confronted with all their issues. I think you are very irresponsible for what you do to people that come to your shows".

Here is what happened next.....

I waited for the man to finish, took a deep breath and said:

"Sir, I don't know who you are or how you got my number but I do know this. I am an artist. My job is to share with you what I see, feel and observe and I share that through my music. My music is not bubble gum pop. It's sweet haunting beautiful melodies with lyrics that are honest and confronting. I don't know how to share it any other way nor do I wish to. This is my art and people don't come to my shows to dance. People come to my shows to experience themselves. It's a place for people to come and swim in their souls freely for an hour and a half. They get lost in my world with me and they breath differently for that hour and a half. Time stands still and space disappears and I am not going to make any apologies for that Sir. I'd suggest that rather than being 'offended' by what you heard you were 'affected' by what you heard. Once again, I am not going to make any apologies for that. My music is the expression of what goes on in my life. I'm not going to dumb it down just because it might offend someone. The truth in my songs speaks to your truth and that's why we're having this conversation. A friend didn't bring you to my show, your choice to reconnect with yourself brought you to my show, no matter how unaware of that choice you are. I can't thank you enough for this call, you have shown me more than you can understand".

I didn't even wait for a response, I just hung up stunned at what just happened! Particularly at what I had just realised about myself.

So much was changing in my life at the time that I received the call (about 10 days ago now). I was gaining so much clarity on Lee Safar and her intricate complexities. This phone call took those complexities and simplified them.

I am many things; a musician, a business woman, an inspirer, a story teller, a very private woman etc etc..., but at my core I am just a humble soul who bleeds and rejoices like everyone else. I invite other souls into those experiences through my honest and revealing music in the hope that they may be encouraged to experience their truth, whatever it is, through that music. I've come to realise that that music profoundly affects people, even when they're not expecting it to.

It may surprise some of my fans to know that I've only just come to accept that my music elicits a profound response from listeners and a live audiences. But that's never the motivating factor when i sit down to write a song. In honesty, the audience isn't a factory in the song writing process at all until it gets recorded for release. I write the songs about me, for me. But I share them with you, for you! In the hope that you may come to be affected like this man was. That your soul may reveal some of your pain giving you the opportunity to heal that pain and consequently be free from it. If that is what happens when you hear my music or see one of my show, I am truly humbled and honoured to be a part of that process. You can't get more intimate with someone than affecting their soul.

To the man who called me....who ever you are, where ever you are. I am forever thankful to you for opening my eyes to the profoundly beautiful life changing affect my music has on the people who come in contact with it. You are now a part of my story, my soul, and my music! Peace....

Can an Artist Really Be Too Honest?

As you guys know I have 2 brands that I am extremely passionate about and work very hard at; My Music and Dream Angel. Dream Angel is a simple guide to living your dreams, while my music is how I prove that that the process behind Dream Angel actually works....for everyone!

TO date, this blog has been a place for me to post all things Music and Dream Angel, but I've decided that from now on it will be more a place to share my thoughts as an artist....

We all know what my music is; it's raw, honest, and I write each song with the intensity that I experience the situation. I was recently confronted by someone quite viciously about my art and whether or not I should be so honest in my song writing.

This questioning came from a man who came to one of my shows with a friend having not heard my music. He somehow managed to find my cell number and contacted me directly to advise me that the intensity in my lyrics and performance border lined on obscene. This is what he said:

I will share the response I gave him in tomorrows post, but today I'd love to hear your thoughts on what what he said.

You need to be able to trust yourself if your going to live your dreams. If you don’t you will never get there.

Trusting yourself is a fundamental part of living your dreams because if you don’t trust that you can create all the resources that you need, you’ll always be looking for other people to ‘make things happen for you’. When you can trust that you can make things happen for you, and you can, you wont be worrying about if you have enough money, or say ‘what if’ or stalling because you can’t find the best people. You will know that you can make all that happen because YOU trust YOU. And you’ll be basing that trust on the work you’ve done to build that trust in yourself.

It’s why they say ‘the journey is more important than the destination’- Because the destination teaches you cool little things like trusting yourself.

In the Dream Angel process, re-building trust with ourselves is one of the first things that is focused on in getting people on the path to living their dreams. It’s called “Building an intimate relationship with ourselves and our environment” and it involves choosing a ‘Red Feather’. It's really interesting what's going on in my life at the moment. I am so busy working on putting together the Dream Angel website and the podcasts, that I didn't take a second to take stock of some of the emotions I was feeling in other parts of my life....nothing like the urge to write a song to sort that out, and then another song, and then another. Before you know it you can't stop and you find yourself howling uncontrollably with emotion. The timing of that outpour of emotion can be a surprise, but it is always welcomed. This time though, what it revealed was a shock!

I don't write music every day. I don't even write every week. I find forcing myself is the worst kind of bastardisation of my craft. When I write, I am obsessive about it. I wont leave the house or take calls or eat or sleep until I've finished doing what I have to do. It's like this beautiful asylum I find myself in that nobody else is allowed to come into.

It's safe to say that I'm an intense person....intense in a beautifully insane kind of way I think! : ) The writings of the last few days have all been very different and quite a surprise. One about the people who love me (which sounds a little like an irish prayer), one about my divorce, and one about looking ahead. I love what came out and it's getting me beyond excited to see what this album is going to sound like.

EXCITING TIMES!!!

As you may know I'm currently in LA! Things are going FANTASTICALLY! I'm working hard and determined as ever to launch both my music and Dream Angel to the next level! Sometimes when you're so determined you don't understand why things aren't happening as quickly as you can think of them but I need to remind myself constantly that I've only been at this a couple of years! Patience is something I've learnt through being in this game LOL
After the last podcast episode, an interview with YouTube Vlogger Emma Clark, I was contacted by a number of people asking if I could do for them, what I had done with Emma- 1-ON-1 Dream Angel-ing. After careful consideration and a little time management it became clear that it was more than do-able. So it's going to be launched as a new service as an extension to the Dream Angel podcast & e-books.
The 1-on-1 sessions will be with me personally and specific details will come shortly on the website currently being developed www.DreamAngelNetwork.com. BUT THE SERVICE IS AVAILABLE NOW! I can't tell you how helpful these sessions are to people. The progress I observe in people when they take these sessions is so amazing that when I hear the changes they've made I'm left doing happy dances around my apartment!
The success of sessions so far has left me wanting not to wait for the pretty website to be launched to get things started. I posed this question on FB & Twitter 2 days ago. This seemed to be quite a significant issue in the process of living our dreams. Interestingly enough, the majority of responses where the same. "The thoughts in my head" & "My weight". Interestingly enough, these were the 2 issues that posed the most major block in my process. In this podcast episode I have addressed both of them by using my own very personal struggle with the thoughts in my head about my weight as an example. This was tough to share but and also an honour to welcome you into my experience of the Dream Angel process.

An interesting meeting......an AMAZING PARALLEL between 2 people!!!

Last night I had a meeting with someone whose work I really want to share with you. I also want to share with you how I came to meet this man and to show you that the Dream Angel process is not just something I talk about, it's something that operates in my life on a minute by minute basis!

The dude I met with last night is Steve Robertson and he is heading up an amazing project called Peace on Earth. A project that I hope to be a part of when it comes together. I encourage everyone to checkout this website. If it resonates with what your into please show your support! How I came to have this meeting is very interesting.

As you guys may know, I left a corporate job as a senior business analyst to follow my passion of coffee making. The skills of gifted Barista's are highly sort after in Australia and I worked very hard at making sure I was one of them. (I'm glad to advise that the Americans are starting to see the light.....FYI Starbucks is not even close to decent coffee- Go to INTELLIGENSIA (@intellivenice) for the closest you'll get to the Australian standard of coffee!!!!) Fortunately for me, my skills afforded me the opportunity to work for some of the best and most sort after coffee houses in Sydney. People who knew coffee would seek these places out, and every now and then you'd get someone walk through the door that just looked like they were special for some reason. You can't quite explain it at the time but you'd just look at that person and you'd say to yourself 'This person is going to be instrumental in my life'. One such person for me was Andrew Darbyshire. I knew from the moment I laid eyes on Andrew that there was something different about him. I would barely speak to him when he'd come in (not characteristic of me at all LOL) but I would say to myself 'There's something significant about this guy. He'll have something to do with my music somehow". At the time I was still figuring out the Dream Angel process and was only up to the part of 'OK I can recognise that this is going to be interesting'.

It took almost 4 years and 3 jobs later before the significance of our connection revealed itself. Andrew was the person who introduced me to Steve Robertson, founder of Project Peace on Earth- A project focusing on affecting the collective consciousness through music on a major scale....the same as what my greater focus is.

In the Dream Angel podcast we talk about making choices and being very aware that opportunities that cross our path, happen purely to aid us in living the choices (or dreams) we make. The people who are instrumental in presenting us with these opportunities, either knowingly or unknowingly, are what we call Dream Angels. Andrew Darbyshire is one of those Dream Angels and I'm suspecting that Steve Robertson may be one too : )

The first week in LA 2010

Tonight marks a week since I've been in LA and while the girls are out on the town discovering the offerings of Santa Monica (namely trying to try find the closest Cheesecake Factory) I'm at home working and reflecting on where I'm at!

I've had only a few challenges this week. The one that's concerning me the most at the moment is my throat. I'm feeling some pain in it and I'm not sure if it's just from the travel or if I've strained it. For a singer, issues in your throat are a pretty big deal but the secret is to rest and not make it a big deal.....[I wish I would stop being so hard on myself about the whole thing and just chill out- for a chick like me chilling out is not something I do very well LOL!!!]

The other challenge that I've been presented with this week has been living so closely with other people! I know that must sound ridiculous but I'm someone who likes my quiet time. Three of my closest girlfriends- Amira, Karem & Tracy have come with me to LA from Sydney for a short time and, while I love them more than you can imagine, I am finding it an interesting experience letting 3 other people see how intense I am. I WORK ALL THE TIME! Not any different to other very highly motivated people, but letting other people see how intense your life is and how hard you work can open you up to alot of judgement. The girls have been wonderful and are trying to let me do my own thing when I need to, but we're all in a predicament....they want me to go hang with them and I WANT to go hang with them (sooooo much)- but I have a mountain of work to do and I'm here to make things happen! I love these girls so much and in 2 weeks they're going home. I'd love nothing more than to take 2 weeks off, sit and drink coffee with them at Intelligensia and talk talk talk. I'm actually surprised at how much of that I'm letting myself do. But I shouldn't be drinking coffee or talking at all. My throat doesn't like either of those things at the moment. I'm feeling really torn about finding balance and I think the concern is adding to the tension in my throat. [ONCE AGAIN CHILL OUT MISS LEE- switch to Decafe and maybe let the girls do all the talking!!!!! LOL]

I'm hoping the week ahead is very productive. I've committed to releasing a Dream Angel podcast every week from now on and a newsletter every week also (Sign up to the mailing list here). We also start rehearsals this week for the Vampire Baseball gig that I'm doing in New Orleans with Mute Math in support of the Haiti Benefit that the cast from Twilight and other NOLA celebs are supporting. I'll be playing with the amazingly talented Ely Rise (Pianist from The Last Goodnight). When you have Ely you don't need a full band. This dude truly is amazing and if you want to see someone who has worked at living their dreams you need to talk to this dude....truly inspiring!

The rest of the week will be meetings meetings meetings with some very exciting people! I'll reveal some details as they come about!

Lee & The girls do In-n-Out before heading out on the town

I LOVE AMERICA....I came here for the first time in 2008 for SxSW in Austin Texas. IT WAS AMAZING and showed me how much I wanted to stay around such motivated and determined people. The attitude of people here is so different from that back home in Australia where the 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' dominates. In the states people see that you have talent and determination, they want to see you succeed and are happy to help you in whatever way they can. Back home, sadly this is not the case and is why so many of us Aussie artists have to make it overseas before our home country accepts us. THAT WORKS FOR ME! Cause as I said I LOVE AMERICA hehe

I have been back a number of times since my first time to SxSW to do various things....record music with Linkin Park exec producer Jeff Blue (Check out the new single Take Me Away- IT ROCKS), meet with business contacts, work with other musicians, and so much more.

Now I find myself here in LA again (With 3 of my closest girlfriends here to assist for a short while) but this time it feels different. I'm not going to lie...LA can be very intimidating. Everyone wants to be a superstar and no-body has the secret recipe to show you how to do that. But I never set out to be a super star. I choose to affect the way the world thinks using my music and my Dream Angel podcast. The reason I'm in LA is to make that happen.

Hold on to your hats.....this is going to be an interesting ride! And I'm giving you front row access to what it takes to make it in the music industry these days!!!! I cant promise that it will all be smiles....but it will be honest!

TAKE ME AWAY was recorded in LA with Linkin Park exec producer Jeff Blue. THIS SONG ROCKS and is one of my favourites. A big power rock song with an awesome feel that makes you want to listen more and more! I really hope you guys love this song as much as I do.
